I’ve got Roger Day’s ketchup song going through my head
today. On top of being pun-ny, it’s got a catchy tune. It’s officially known as the “Super
Secret Mystery Track” on Ready to Fly—check
it out here.
So, the
kids have gone back to school and it’s catch up day. I remember a time when a
day was all I needed! In college, I could just go zero-to-sixty one day and
catch up on everything I’d been blowing off. A few years after college, I could
take a day and clean my entire (studio) apartment and catch up on my bills. When
we were first married, I could come back to work after vacation and catch up in
one good day of hard work.
You can
see part of the problem right there—I don’t do that zero-to-sixty thing so much
anymore. Plus “a good day of hard work” is hard to find. There are bound to be
significant chunks of day devoted to The Management of Children. And, while no
one will deny that’s hard work, it’s not getting anyone caught up. In fact,
raising children often feels like the opposite of progress—running on a
treadmill, emulating Sisyphus, bailing with a teaspoon…you pick your image.
I’m not
going to get caught up today, and I’m okay with that. Christmas has been put
away, the house is (relatively) clean, I’ve got some good STD lists going—that stands
for Stuff To Do. And yes, I use the initials because they make me laugh. And
they’re shorter. But mostly because they make me laugh.
On top
of all that, I worked out today and then achieved the Mommy Trifecta! Yes,
folks, my personal grooming today included a shower with hair wash…and shaving…and
nail care! The Mommy Trifecta!
I
suspect my brother stopped reading about there. But who cares? It’s a catch up
blog.
I’m
about out of time to sit down and write—time to go pick up kids. Hmmm. There’s
a lot more of “picking up” than catching up in my life these days. I sense another
blog coming on. Better go catch up on my coffee.
I’ll
catch up on my sleep when I’m about sixty!
